Frequently asked questions

Everything you'll want to know before your first class. Can't find your answer? Give us a call at (732) 682-1840.

01. What age can my child start?

We welcome students ages 8 and up — kids, teens, and adults all train at Kanzen. Total beginners are always welcome; no prior experience is needed.

02. I have no experience and I'm out of shape. Is that okay?

Absolutely. Many of our students start with no martial arts background at all. The traditional curriculum meets you where you are, and you train at your own pace from day one.

03. What style do you teach, and how is it different?

We teach Kanzen Gōjū-Ryū — a traditional system of karate. We are a serious, traditional dojo: not a sport, not a daycare. Classes emphasize kata, real self-defense, protocol, and respect.

04. Is the training safe? Does it include sparring?

Yes to both. Regular classes include full but controlled sparring, always with proper protective gear — hand pads, foot pads, shin guards, and a mouthpiece — under close instruction. Karate trains body awareness and control, and is often safer than collision-based youth sports.

05. When are classes?

Classes run Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30–9:30 PM, at 37 Vanderburg Road in Marlboro.

06. How often should I train?

Training twice a week is the proven cadence for steady progress — and our unlimited membership covers exactly that. Consistency, week after week, is what builds skill and discipline.

07. How much does it cost, and is there a contract?

Membership is $150 per month for unlimited classes, month-to-month with no contracts and no sign-up fees. We also offer discounts for families, multiple children, military, and first responders.

08. How long does it take to earn a black belt?

Roughly five to six years of consistent training. Students advance through ten kyu ranks — white, green, purple, and brown — with formal belt testing along the way, typically about six months to a year per belt.

09. What should I wear to my trial lesson?

Just comfortable athletic clothes — sweatpants or shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. No uniform needed for the trial. We remove shoes before stepping onto the mat.
